How this calculator works

Paste or type a list of numbers and see the main summary statistics at once. The mean adds the values and divides by how many there are; the median is the middle value when sorted; the mode is the most common value. Standard deviation measures how spread out the numbers are.

Use the sample standard deviation when your numbers are a sample from a larger group, and the population version when they are the entire group.

Formula

Mean = Σx ÷ n. Sample standard deviation = √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ (n − 1)). Population standard deviation = √(Σ(x − mean)² ÷ n).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the arithmetic average; the median is the middle value. The median is less affected by extreme values.

Sample or population standard deviation?

Use sample (n − 1) when the data is a subset of a larger group, population (n) when you have every value.
